By grace ye are saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is a gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.Good works are only a side-effect of faith. No man can work his way to heaven. Indeed we must keep His commandments, it is part of the baptismal covenant. But that is only in order that we may receive the Spirit. It is through the spirit that we receive all grace.
It is through the cleansing power and the enabling power of the atonement that faith and good works are made possible. These things are free gifts made available to those who ask with a sincere heart and real intent.
